Arizona - October, 2011

I have friends in Arizona that I try to go visit about once a year.  This year I combined my trip out there with the NHRA Arizona Nationals at Firebird International Raceway.  Going to an NHRA Top Fuel event has been something I've wanted to do for a very long time and I decided this year was the year.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2011 NHRA Class Champions ....

  • o  Eddie Krawiec - Pro-Stock Motorcycle
  • o  Jason Line - Pro-Stock
  • o  Matt Hagan - Funny Car
  • o  Del Worsham - Top Fuel

Some of the best last-minute shuffling I've seen in years.  Only Pro-Stock was locked-in before the last race of the year.  All of you, not just the class winners but the entire NHRA field, did a fantastic job this year and it has been my pleasure to enjoy your efforts for the past season.

Yes, I have lots more photos.  I shot about 500 frames but these are my favorites.  I learned very quickly that photographing top fuel events is not that easy.  These machines accelerate from a standing stop to 100mph in about 0.8 second.  I was watching the tree with one eye and when the yellow came on I held the shutter release down for about a second.  By that time there were passing me and I couldn't keep up with them.

The following day we visited the Desert Botanical Gardens.  They had an exhibit of huge wooden insects as well as an enclosure full of Monarch Butterflies.  The Desert Boanical Gardens are a gorgeous place in their own right and one of my favorite places when visiting that area.

As always this would have been a hollow and boring trip were it not for my hosts.  You guys mean the world to me and I miss you already.
